WHERE EVERY CHILD IS MVP
I was the youngest, shortest and slowest of 4 boys who grew up in a loving home with little academic guidance. As I matured in my adult years, I realized I was pushed through life in order to make room for the next student and/or player. It's too late for do-overs for me. SAM-F will teach youth the true way to be a student/athlete through our mentorship and sports programs. It's time to hold coaches, parents and youth accountable so we do not develop a partial child, but a whole-child.
"Where every child is an MVP”
The Securing A Mind Foundation mission is to Educate, Elevate, and Empower youth through academics, health, and sports." I wished we had programs like Securing A Mind Foundation. The leaders that had a chance to make a significant impact in my life could have done much better. I remembered them pushing us athletically but rarely academically where it really mattered most," We must change that approach going forward with like-minded organizations," Hines states.
Securing A Mind Foundation vision is committed to approach, “Coaching in the moment” by advancing pro-social values such as honesty, integrity, accountability, sportsmanship, good nutrition, and mutual respect. Securing A Mind Foundation has based its program on the U.S. Department of Education recommendation that, “A healthy lifestyle helps protect against a host of serious health outcomes, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.” www.ed.gov

WHERE EVERY CHILD IS MVP
A picture of me playing in Cantu, Italy where I was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The journey allowed me to play against or with Manu Ginobili, (SanAntonio Spurs), Baby Shaq, Dante Calabria, Adelmola Okulaja (UNC), Thus Edney (UCLA), Trajan Langdon (Duke),
During my time off, I would take time to visit the historical sites. One of my best places to visit and take my friends was the city of water - Venice. I am standing at the Palazzo di San Marco. www.assocazionepiazzasanmarco.it
While playing on a sore achilles in Reggio Emilia, we matched up in the semi-finals against Siena. I was guarding a former teammate, Bootsy Thornton, during the last 5 seconds with our team winning by a point. Bootsy made his move for the winning shot. I timed the shot, blocked it and we advanced to the finals against Bennetton. Wow!
Adelmola Okulaja (UNC) who played beside Vince Carter, took away my 3 pointer, so I drove baseline against him for a score. Like I teach the youth, it doesn't matter who you play against. Just trusting your training and make a move with confidence and you will thrive. When I drove pass 6'9" player, I had a 7'0" waiting for me at the rim, and this is why you must work on the pull up jumper, runner, or dunk.
Here is one of the highlight reverse moves I had while playing with Dante Calabria (UNC - on the left side). He was another great teammate and player I had the chance to run the court with for a season. I continue to tell these young players I play against today after 50 years of age that they can not handle me on the court back in the day.
Another great talent in this game who played against me in this pic was American star Derrick Hamm. He was one of the best slashing players I ever played against. I have taught alot of players to work hard, square up your shoulders, and shoot with confidence. Here is a game winning shot against one of our rivals. During my days in Italy, if you aren't bleeding, it ain't a foul lol. Keep on playing Americano.
Name from L to R; Bootsy Thornton (St. John), Samuel Hines (Uni of South Alabama), Shaun Stonerook (Uni of Ohio), & Jerry McCollough (Uni of Pittsburgh; this was the best group of players I played with during my 18 years professionally. We had a lot of great wins finished with great dining in Cantu, Milan, and Como. Proud to have been selected into Cantu Hall of Fame with this crew.
When playing against our rivals, Varese, I would get really hyped because their fans were always trying to be more creative than ours fans throughout the game with crazy antics I can not go into lol. Here is one of my most memorable shots where I practice on this court for many hours.
Coach Hines grabs a rebound against the powerful team, Bennetton, who were led by Tyus Edney (UCLA / NCAA Champion). Tyus was one of my favorite players wo watch.
Playing the guard spot at 6'7", I had an epic game against Rome. After missing my first shot, I scored 26 points in 14 min in the first half; 10-11 fg. Ptay focused after a miss because you never know what will follow. This photo reminded me to continue to work on my total game which includes pushing the ball down the court to make decisions which lead me to the Hall of Fame in You see, at USA, I was not allowed to push the ball which made us easier to guard as a team. Focus on your craft!
After playing and winning championships in South America, I arrived and started training in the hot mountains in Italy. The organization was a tight knit group. We not only won but I found myself leading the team. By the time I knew it, we defeated our rivals often. Rival or not, I was trying to get mine to help the team regardless it was diving for a loose ball, taking a charge or blocking a shot. Before one game, I found myself being called to the middle of the court to receive an award for
Off a fast break, I had to get a bit fancy for the fans and did my signature reverse dunk against 4x future NBA Champion & HOF, Manu Ginobili. 2001-02 I was named beside Manu on the Italian 1st Team All-Star. I always had the mentality that I can knock that shot down just like Jordans or Birds of the world. If not me, then who? I only can control how much or what I work on during the off-season, during and after practices. I became gym rat even if was one of the top players. Those were the da
300 lbs of muscle, I had the pleasure to play with Baby Shaq from Greece. After Shaq ate two plates of risotto before a game, Pino asked me to work with him on what is required to be great. So after practice we worked on his conditioning, footwork, and shooting technique. Memorable moment: coach said we could just play 5 on 5 and Shaq thought I could not guard him with my 2. So by the end of the game, he learned that the kid N.C. was not Lets just say I got the best of him in that scrimmage.
During my free time, I would attend the local professional ladies league only to find Michael Cooper in the stands. We talked for a while as we watched basketball. He learned that I had foundation fundraising event and promised to stop by to support. It meant so much to have the legend stop in and show his love for the program.
Stephanie Turconi, my Italian player/daughter, asked me would I help coach during my free time? What free time: LOL. After my team practice was over, I had the privilege to coach the girl's Rec team in Italy. We worked on keeping the game simple, improving our ball skills and basketball IQ. They accompanied me to my Securing A Mind Foundation event in Cantu. These ladies have moved on in life becoming wives, mothers, and business owners. Thanks for making my time-off so much fun.
The Italia Cup consisted of the top 8 teams in the league towards the middle of the season. We were lined up to play Milan, then Siena, followed by Bennetton three days in a row. At the beginning of training camp in Reggio Emilia, I was about 34 and suffered an injury called Plantar fasciitis. It was my first major injury. It was the time when I realized that basketball can't last forever which allowed me to think about life after basketball. Let's prepare our youth at a younger age.
To the Cantu family: thanks for showing my family love while I played in the great city of Cantu. Please someone send me the Risotto instructions lol. Ti amero per sempre.
"Teaching the youth how to work together and share the ball, and the importance of picking your teammate up when they are down is something you will carry with you for life and the corporate world. Ballerz on three" states Hines.
